Overview

• Demonstrates courtesy, tact and professionalism when interacting with patients/guarantors and their family members, volunteers, physicians, and all other employees of the organization. • Adheres to Department and Hospital policies and procedures. • Counsels patients, guarantors and /or appropriate family members regarding internal financial assistance programs as well as, external financial assistance programs (Mass Health, Health Safety Net, Connector Care Programs, Medical Hardships, etc). Assists patients as needed with the application process for these programs. • Communicates with managed care payors in order to facilitate coverage of medical services. • Communicates as necessary and appropriate with other Hospital and Agency staff regarding patient's financial status. • May make referrals to appropriate State, County and town Agencies as well as to community resource organizations. • Maintains files, logs and records in accordance with department policy and procedure. Documents all contact and correspondence relative to job performance. • Maintains confidentiality of sensitive information (i.e. patient and/or guarantor financial data, patient medical data, etc). • Identifies operational and procedural issues, problems and errors, and constructively participates on an ongoing basis in development and implementation of solutions. • Provides coverage for the Cashier as needed. • Explain and process payments from patients which may include, but not limited to, co-pays, co-insurance, payment plans, deductibles and outstanding balances etc. Follow department procedures related to securing payment information and reconciling daily receipts. • Performs other similar and/or related duties as required or directed by management. • Ability to read, write and speak effectively in English. • High School Diploma or General Education Diploma (GED) with one year of business concentration preferred. • Must type a minimum of 30 words per minute. • Basic Math skills, and ability to apply skills, as demonstrated by successful completion of a timed business math test, using manual and calculator aided computations to solve problems presented in a math test. • Basic computer skills with at least one year's experience with Health Information Systems (HIS). • One year of experience counseling or advising patients with respect to financial, public assistance or social service related programs, or demonstrated knowledge of medical benefits programs, benefits or eligibility criteria. OR Medical collection and clerical business office is required. Must be proficient in the use of calculators, and computers. • Must have excellent communication skills and demonstrated sensitivity to patient concerns regarding inability to meet financial responsibilities. • Successful completion of the Certified Application Counselor (CAC) training within one month of hire. Purpose of Position Under the direction of the Patient Access Manager; receives, processes and coordinates information to facilitate Hospital reimbursement. Coordinates and assists patients with Uncompensated Care, MassHealth, and other Medical Benefits Assistance Program applications and determinations. Maintains logs, records and files sufficient to support above responsibilities.
